Case 01
O-Nexus is an innovation campus in Nakanoshima, Osaka, run by Nippon Life and CIC. Its sales team plays this film in client meetings. I took it from a motion-graphics first cut in September to a film that mixes live action and motion graphics, presented in person by a Nippon Life staff member. Five weeks, four main versions.
01
The brief arrived as an email and a few documents: explain, in four to five minutes, a place where new businesses come out of meeting people, for the sales team to play in meetings. I wrote a script from that and built a cut in After Effects with only moving type and shapes, over a temporary synthetic voice.
At a meeting on 8 September the client gave me a content outline and their existing footage, and I worked those in. On the 9th I delivered the first version: 4:29, drawn in red and white illustrations.
02
In mid-September the direction changed. The client wanted O-Nexus summed up in six points and presented in person by their own staff member, half live action and half animation, and easier to grasp through movement than through charts.
I proposed three structures, then storyboarded to the narration script the presenter wrote. I filmed only the presenter and used existing footage for the rest of the building. Instead of a teleprompter, the lines went on large cue cards.
03
In October I turned the 24-shot storyboard into moving video first, so we could decide by watching. The second version, on 2 October, linked the logo's six rings to the six points; following feedback I dropped that and kept the logo in the top-right corner. I also rewrote figures that could read as already achieved when they were targets.
I tried flat diagrams too, then settled on the glassy look and 3D icons for the third version on 7 October.
04
On 8 October we recorded the narration in the morning and filmed the presenter after. That same day every placeholder became real footage and the presenter's own voice, and colour and sound were evened out.
The next day I matched the lip movement to the cue-card lines, added subtitles, unified the official name and brought in CIC's logo and colour. That is the current fourth version, made with and without a self-introduction at the start.
